I often used to say that I dislike it when people pretend to be more than what they actually are in any particular discipline, or just in general. That has nothing to do with their actual level. That just means that on this graph they are anywhere to the left and above the grey line. The further the distance from the grey line, the less the person is sympathetic to me. I sympathize more with the people who stay somewhere around the grey line. In my view it represents how one should carry themselves.

In reality, though, the graph often slopes down from the upper left quadrant, to the lower right quadrant. The more you know they more you realize how little you actually know. The more you know, the more you learn to doubt any definitive statements. I am not saying it is a good thing to doubt absolutely everything, but it sure takes a smart person to err on the side of caution, and you rarely see truly intelligent people brag about how smart they are. So I generally prefer people who linger in the lower right quadrant.
